Job Title: Oyster Farm Manager Full Time (40 hrs. per week)

Phillips Wharf Environmental Center encourages, educates, and engages Chesapeake Bay stewards of all ages through interactive experiences showcasing the Bay's ecosystem and its inhabitants. One of its activities is a year-round oyster farm located in Tilghman Island, Maryland operating as Fisherman’s Daughter Oysters. The oyster farm includes a nursery, grow out facilities, and multiple bottom leases. The Wharf provides seed and spat to other oyster farmers and sells oysters to wholesale and retail markets.  Phillips Wharf is looking to hire a Farm Manager to oversee major aspects of the farm. The Farm Manager will work side by side with the rest of our team as well as being responsible for a farm apprentice, farm hands and interns.

We are looking for an experienced full time, reliable manager, who can efficiently manage a crew and communicate well. The right candidate will be detailed orientated, very organized, hardworking and able to keep a crew on task at all times. Oyster farming is an extremely exciting growth industry for the Eastern Shore of Maryland and this position offers an opportunity to learn and refine one’s skills for all aspects of operating an oyster farm. If you have management experience, are dependable, able to follow directions, are interested in outdoor work, and have a strong work ethic, we can teach you the rest.

Compensation: $17.00 per hour to start

Duties will include general farm management, inclusive of:

  •  boat operations,
  •  planting, cleaning and sorting seed oysters, as well as rotation of stock,
  •  working hydraulic boom, pulling cages, harvesting, sorting and preparing oysters for market
  •  keeping inventory, harvest and other records as needed.
  •  maintaining contact with and expanding relationships with other oyster farms and wholesale oyster markets
  •  supervising the nursery operations and crew members

Requirements:

  •  Previous aquaculture experience preferred, but not required
  •  Must have previous management experience
  •  Personal transportation and valid driver’s license required
  •  Must be able to lift 50lb
  •  Prior boating experience and able to operate a workboat boat (24’ Carolina Skiff boat)
  •  Knowledge of boating safety principles
  •  Able to follow a flexible schedule that will include long days, early mornings, and weekend work
  •  Have an upbeat personality and positive attitude
  •  Ability to work in adverse weather conditions
  •  Ability to work independently and as a part of a team
  •  Sales and marketing experience helpful
  •  Flexible and able to adapt to changing situations
  •  Good attitude and reliability

Job Title: Oyster Farm Hand Part Time (20 – 30 hrs. per week)

One of its activities is a year-round oyster farm located in Tilghman Island, Maryland operating as Fisherman’s Daughter Oysters. The oyster farm includes a nursery, grow out facilities, and multiple bottom leases. The Wharf provides seed and spat to other oyster farmers and sells oysters to wholesale and retail markets. Phillips Wharf is looking to hire Farm Hands. We are looking for dedicated people, who would like to learn all aspects of modern oyster farming.

Compensation: $12.50 per hour

Duties will include general farm maintenance, inclusive of:

  •  Seed work/cleaning, feeding and grading seed
  •  Power washing gear
  •  Harvest and sort oysters
  •  Preparing oysters for market
  •  Delivering oysters to buyers
  •  Preparing shell bags for spat on shell setting
  •  Preparing setting tanks for spat on shell sets
  •  Keeping oyster house tidy and presentable

Requirements:

  •  Previous aquaculture experience preferred, but not required
  •  Able to bend down, stand, kneel for long periods of time
  •  Personal transportation and valid driver’s license required
  •  Must be able to lift 50lb
  •  Boat experience preferred
  •  Knowledge of boating safety principles
  •  Able to follow a flexible schedule that will include long days, early mornings, and weekend work
  • Have an upbeat personality and positive attitude
  •  Able to do repetitive work well and efficiently
  •  Ability to work in adverse weather conditions
  •  Ability to work independently and as a part of a team
  •  Flexible and able to adapt to changing situation
  •  Good attitude and reliability
